"This is my third and final watercolor of this beach scene. The first was Jennie's Girl, a tiny Whiskey Painting, and the second was So Like Her Mom, half the size of this one. (You can scroll to see all three with the arrows at the top right.) The focal point, young Sofia, is basically the same in each painting, but I varied the backgrounds and my colors. This is the first time I've painted the same subject three times and it was a valuable learning experience.
In this version an empty beach chair suggests the presence of another (and balances the composition), and some distant figures appear in the waves. I altered the angle of the incoming surf and made a stronger distinction between the wet and dry sand. I simplified the sky to a solid blue and added overall warmer tones than used in the smaller versions, like with the turquoise in Sofia's shirt. I think the golden sand better suggests the heat of the sun at the beach. The rocks here are not so imposing as previous and I added depth with a more distant shoreline. I gave a lot of attention to the figure of Sofia herself, enjoying all the details as I had previously.
My efforts have already proven to be a success. I submitted three paintings to the upcoming Tennessee Watercolor Society Biennial Exhibition, and this one was accepted!"
