“My first encounter with the uniquely shaped Columbine blossom was when I came across some growing in the wild on my land. Over the years I have saved the seeds and planted them in my cultivated gardens as well as in an area I call my "cultivated wildflower gardens". The latter are not far from the house, on the woodland trail where I walk every morning. I’ve seeded and transplanted many gorgeous spring wildflowers on both sides of the trail, including those which grow in abundance on my land as well as many given to me by friends or purchased at wildflower nurseries. I love walking by these areas iearly in the year, watching for the first signs of these perennial beauties emerging from their winter sleep. My cultivated wildflower gardens have taught me to recognize a multitude of spring wildflowers in every stage of growth and also give me a barometer of when I should bushwhack through the woods to see the same flowers in bloom in their own wild habitats.
Watercolors on Claybord, used transparently, glow brilliantly, due to the Kaolin clay surface of the panels. Claybord also gives me the ability to re-wet and lift colors as well as scratching through the paint layer to reveal the original white surface. I incorporated these techniques, and loved adding the fine tiny white fibers along the stem and petals with my scratches.”
