"This is the third of five Whiskey Paintings in my “Red Barn” series. Each is painted in watercolors, diluted with alcohol spirits in the water. I chose Jack Daniel Old No. 7 Sour Mash Tennessee Whiskey, since it is distilled in my home state. I love old barns and have a huge reference photo file of barns in my area. Not all are red, but I could use artistic license on those just weathered to grey. The exhibit will be on display over July 4th, our nation’s 250th birthday, so I added a barn quilt in red, white and blue to each barn I painted. I titled each painting to reflect my patriotic theme.

This barn had weathered grey siding in all the photos I have taken of it over the years. I liked the shape of it and chose it as reference for the spring red barn in my series. I added the tractor for more interest, used spring greens in the foliage, and put bright yellow flowers in the foreground. I simplified the fenced area in front of the barn. The barn quilt design inspired the title I chose."
