"For a different twist on a whiskey painting, which officially needs to be no larger than 20 sq.in., I got the idea to paint an image within a circle. I calculated the area of different size circles and discovered that a 5” circle is 19.63 sq. in. Perfect! I was off and running, ready to create a series of whiskey paintings of a favorite subject, flowers. As a challenge, I aimed to use very transparent pigments, glazing to create luminescence to make even a white flower glow in sunlight.
I chose a photo I had taken of a lovely white Rose of Sharon. I’d been watching YouTube videos from various talented artists and saw how one was using both watercolor paints and watercolor colored pencils. I had a box of 24 Faber Castell “Goldfaber Aqua” pencils. I could draw with them on the watercolor paper, then use a wet brush to dissolve and spread the color… a technique new to me. I some places I used them differently, making a patch of one color on a scrap of watercolor paper, wetting it with my paint brush, then brushing the color in the same way I’d use watercolor paints. This technique gave me some nice bright colors, as you can see. I got a bit too colorful for the flower to look white, but I liked the 3-dimensional appearance I was able to achieve. Note to self: try watercolor pencils again.”
