"I can't resist a rusty old vehicle as a subject for my art. This car is parked in a grassy area next to a main road, right in front of a billboard advertising for a business which wants old vehicles. On a sunny morning I parked on a quiet side road from which I could safely walk over and take lots of reference photos of the car for a future painting. I was careful to include a close up of the rear, where I could still read the lettering for "Packard Clipper." For my current series of old vehicles as mini whiskey paintings, I was ready to add a fourth, and this would fit in well."
My setting for the formerly blue car came from other photos in my reference files. I thought it would be fun to locate the vehicle in a pasture, with a distant mountain view much like those which surround my home in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. I suggested the silhoetted distant fenceline and added two residents to the pasture, busy grazing. My final farm touch was the barbed wire on old wood fenceposts. I painted this on Claybord, which allowed me to use a sharp pointed tool to scratch through the paint layer and reveal the white clay surface of the panel - an ideal way to create the barbed wiring, antenna, the comorant hood ornament and other white accents on the vehicle."
This Whiskey Painting was created with watercolors diluted with Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Sour Mash Tennessee Whiskey.
