"I most often use my own reference photos for my paintings, but a photo by my friend Dawn of her cat inspired this painting. I knew Aquabord™ white scratchboard would be the ideal painting surface to capture the interesting textures. Using watercolors, I painted light and dark areas of the mauve color of the sheepskin behind the kitty, then used the "lifting" property of Aquabord to remove the paint. To make soft light areas I rubbed irregular spots on the surface with a dampened paint brush, then gently blotted with paper towel to remove the paint. In some areas I worked similarly with a dampened Q-tip. The cat's body looked quite ugly with my initial application of loose areas of many paint colors. I painted the body colors relatively dark since I planned to scratch back through the paint to the white surface to create the fur texture.
Animals continue to be a favorite painting subject for me, particularly this contented kitty who makes those who see her smile."
